Position:                           School Nurse, LPN

                                                             

Term:                              Full-time, 9 Months

Location:                          District Wide

 

Qualifications:                    Licensed LPN

 

Supervisory:                     No

 

Reports to:                       Nurse Coordinator

 

Successful candidates will be able to implement and evaluate student health services at assigned schools. Nurses are expected to Support the educational mission of the Joplin School District by promoting optimal health and learning in all students. Assists medically fragile students and students with special health care needs to integrate safely and successfully into the school environment.

  • Conduct all official business in a professional and timely manner, utilizing district technology resources.
  • Arrive to work and leave work at the time specified by supervisors and attend all required meetings pertinent to the position.
  • Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy.
  • Solve practical problems utilizing math functions as needed to complete job duties.
  • Read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks and apply to job duties.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains a complete and up-to-date health record system using available technology
  • Plans and conducts screenings, examinations, and health appraisals in accordance with State Law and District Policy
  • Monitors newly enrolled students in order to insure State Law and District Policy are implemented
  • Advises students, staff, and parents on appropriate and concerning health issues
  • Makes referrals to school resources and  to the community
  • Serves as consultant and resource person in health instruction and curriculum planning
  • Implements homebound instruction
  • Provides input to the Administration concerning State Law and development of District Policies related to health issues
  • Provides first aid as needed
  • Assists emergency care givers as applicable
  • Maintains appropriate records
  • School Wide Intervention Focus Team (SWIFT)
  • Refers students with suspected disabilities to District Specialists
  • Facilitates health appraisals for pupils referred to SWIFT
  • Participates in SWIFT deliberations
  • Make recommendations to the Principal regarding health and safety
  • Administers medication
  • Maintains professional competence by doing professional reading and attending appropriate workshops
  • Assists in providing training for District Staff concerning health- related issues
  • Communicates with parents/guardians
  • Cooperates and shares professionally with members of district staff
  • Keeps staff informed about relevant health issues
  • Communications with various health- related organizations in the community
  • Carry out all other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand or sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Conditions and Environment

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess.
